Our Favourite Game Reserves in Northern KwaZulu-Natal
By Kate W on Safari
When people think of a South African safari, Kruger often comes to mind. But tucked away in the lush northeast of KwaZulu-Natal is one of our absolute favourite regions for wildlife, landscapes, and unforgettable family adventures: northern KZN. This area offers a rich mix of Big 5 game viewing, wetlands, cultural heritage, and off-the-beaten-track beauty — all without the crowds.
Here are our top game reserves and safari stays that we keep going back to (sometimes with kids in tow, sometimes just us grown-ups).
🐘 Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park – Wild, Raw, and Real
This is the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa and one of the best places to see rhinos in the wild. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is vast, wild, and absolutely thrilling. We love the rolling hills, riverbeds, and winding roads that feel like a real safari adventure.
It’s a self-drive friendly park, which makes it great for families. Pack snacks, take it slow, and keep your eyes peeled — we’ve spotted lions, elephants, buffalo, and even wild dogs here!
Family tip: Early mornings are magical. Bring binoculars and encourage kids to be ‘wildlife spotters’ – it keeps everyone engaged.
🐘 Tembe Elephant Park – Home of the Giants
If you want to see truly majestic elephants, Tembe is the place. It’s home to some of the largest tuskers in Africa. This park borders Mozambique and has a wild, remote feel we adore.
It’s a community-run reserve, which means your visit directly supports local people. Game drives are guided (no self-drive), and the rangers here are phenomenal storytellers with deep knowledge of the land.
Why we love it: It’s a slower pace, deep sand tracks, and big-hearted elephants. Tembe feels like a secret — and we hope it stays that way.
🌊 iSimangaliso Wetland Park – Where Safari Meets the Sea
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is more than a park — it’s a whole ecosystem. From hippos in the St. Lucia Estuary to turtles nesting on Sodwana Bay’s beaches, iSimangaliso offers a wild blend of land, lake, and ocean.
Our kids love the variety here: snorkeling, boat cruises, beach walks, birdwatching, and yes — the occasional buffalo or leopard sighting!
Must do: Take a boat cruise on Lake St. Lucia and count how many hippos you can spot before lunch.
🏞️ Ghost Mountain Inn – A Tranquil Base for Adventure
This charming inn in Mkuze offers comfort, great food, and easy access to surrounding parks. We love stopping here for a night or two to recharge. The views of Ghost Mountain are spectacular, and there’s a real sense of Zulu heritage throughout the property.
They offer guided trips into nearby reserves or cultural tours — perfect for curious kids (and grown-ups) who want to learn more about the people and places of this region.
Why it works for families: Pool time, nature walks, and flexible dining make it an easy and relaxing stopover.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Northern KwaZulu-Natal is special. It’s where dense bush meets golden beaches, where elephants walk ancient trails and where our children learn that nature isn’t something to be feared — but cherished and protected.
If you’re looking for a classic Big 5 safari, an eco-conscious escape, or a trip filled with cultural learning and natural beauty, this region has it all.
We hope our family favourites help you plan your own wild adventure.
